A view of the Sun Pyramid from the top of the Moon Pyramid - built around 200 A.D. this plaza was the spiritual center of Teotihuacan in what is now Mexico: a city of 200,000 - far larger than any European metropolis at that time.
It was a sweltering day in December 2007, and we climbed, breathless, up near vertical steps.
A civilization whose monuments rival or perhaps out-shine the Greeks'? I was truly aghast to think something like this existed on my own continent and I had never heard of it. A pyramid so big, it is only bested by those built by the Egyptians at Giza.
This is was the first of many revelations in Mexico, and a simple illustration of the beauty of travel. The trip also sparked my interest in muralism, a topic I hope to discuss at a later date.
